Amniotic fluid

The fetus almost swims in the amniotic fluid which protects it from external injuries and facilitates movement. There is normally about 900 to 1,000 ml of amniotic fluid around the baby, but this may vary depending on the season, and the individual constitution of the mother. All this fluid is replaced every 3 to 4 hours.

The fluid is merely expelled by the fetus, through the urine. The amniotic fluid also ensures that there is no under pressure exerted on the fetus.

When the uterus begins contracting during labor. It facilitates the movement of the fetus.

The amniotic fluid is released when the membranes rupture, which precedes the process of labor. This is commonly known as 'water breaking'.

At full time, the amniotic fluid naturally begins to degrees.

Nowadays there are many cases where the amniotic fluid decreases suddenly and unexplainably during the 8th or 9th month of pregnancy. This is obviously detrimental to the health of the fetus.

It is pertinent, that an adequate amount of amniotic fluid is essential for the proper nourishment of the foetus.
